Meet Our Member: Glasgow Student Housing Cooperative

Glasgow Student Housing Cooperative moved into their new home in Ibrox, Glasgow, in July 2025. The students have worked for years to arrange the purchase of a property to provide cooperative rental accommodation to students, an affordable alternative to private rents with stable tenancies and democratic control.

The student housing they provide contrasts with what's on offer on the private rental and purpose built student accommodation markets. After Glasgow City Council’s declaration of a “housing emergency” in 2024, tenant organisers must deliver solutions to Glasgow’s renters. Glasgow Student Housing Cooperative will provide a home to 5 students in a shared flat. The accommodation is well below market rate in price, is democratically controlled through a cooperative structure, and has a community mindset, which typical student accommodation often lacks.

Glasgow Student Housing Co-op seeks to build a vibrant and sustainable community promoting autonomy and democratic decision making whilst providing students with quality housing at fair rents.

OUR AIMS: - To encourage active participation, education and skill sharing between members; To run the co-op in a way that is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable; To provide rent that is fair and ensure that studewnts have a say in their housing; To achieve autonomy and democracy through consensus decision making; To build a strong, supportive and inclusive community; To continually improve, develop and grow the co-op.
